Smiles Everyone...Smiles!

Welcome to the second edition of Cris’ Corner of 2017.  For those who had the time and inclination to take a trip down memory lane over the holiday by checking out the daily fare of the “Best-of-the-Corner 2016,” I hope you enjoyed the retrospective.

At times, it’s hard to envision writing 50 Corners each year.  Not because there’s any lack of activity to share, but because it’s not a simple task to make politics interesting.  Although, were the Corner about politics in general, and not solely relegated to our chiropractic activities, it would be considerably easier.  We are indeed living in interesting times.

Student CCA ChiroCon – Tuesday, January 24th!

2017 is getting off to rip-roaring start with our inaugural student CCA lobby day, ChiroCon, set to launch January 24.

Meetings with legislators and staff are being set up, logistics locked down, ChiroCon scarves delivered, and collateral materials to be printed. Our students are registering and arranging transportation to the Capitol.  There is no cost to students to attend ChiroCon other than transportation to the event.  We’re looking forward to an exciting and productive day!

2017 Legislative Conference – March 7th – Registration Up and Going

Speaking of free, our legislative conference is also quickly approaching, and it also has no cost to attend other than transportation.  Yes, you read that correctly, there is NO registration fee for CCA members to attend any of the day’s many activities.  We don’t know if we’ll be able to offer this every year, but don’t miss out on this year’s opportunity. Hope to see you Tuesday, March 7. Click here to register!

The Bill Author Shopping Continues…

Monica Miller and I have also been walking the halls under the dome pitching our legislative proposals for 2017.  Securing authors for our bills is always a challenge.  Hopefully, since the Assembly increased the number of bills allowed to be introduced to 50, it will be a little easier.  The Senate has not decided if they will increase their bill introduction limit.  As a Democrat with a strong Libertarian streak, I’m not sure more laws necessarily translate into better governing or quality of life.  I guess we’ll have to reserve judgement until we see how it all plays out.

I must confess, as Capitol staff I always advocated for a smaller bill limit.  My dream was no more than 15 bills each year of the two-year session, for a total of 30 bills.  I thought it would force us to focus on the biggest challenges facing the state and allow for greater and more detailed discourse on solutions to those challenges.

Of course, we always took our bills that didn’t pass the first year, amended them into completely new bills for the second year, and then introduced the max for the second year.  Consequently, we were always way over the actual limit.  Working within the spirit of the rules was more often the modus operandi, then operating under the letter of rules.  Sometimes these things are more like guidelines.

CCA Board Of Directors Meeting Outcome

Our Board of Directors held their first face-to-face meeting of 2017 last weekend.  If you haven’t already heard, Dr. Leslie Hewitt was reelected President of CCA.  Congratulations Dr. Hewitt.  This means we get another year with Dr. Brian Stenzler as our Immediate Past President (IPP).  Dr. Shery was reelected to serve as Secretary, and Dr. Bueler was elected Treasurer.  The results of the election take effect July 1, 2017.  Please find a moment out of your busy day to congratulate and thank our board members for their willingness to volunteer their time and skills to govern our association.

Board of Chiropractic Examiners – Elects Dr. Heather Dehn As Chair

It was my pleasure to attend the Board of Chiropractic Examiners (BCE) meeting this week and witness the election of Dr. Heather Dehn as BCE’s new Chair.  Congratulations Dr. Dehn!  She will be replacing the distinguished tenure of Dr. Sergio Azzolino.  Please take a moment to congratulate Dr. Dehn and thank Dr. Azzolino for all his fine work.  You may recall, Dr. Azzolino was our star witness in support of last year’s AB 1992 regarding pre-participation sports physicals.

I had the pleasure of meeting with Dr. Dehn recently to discuss how CCA and BCE can work together to better educate our profession on the role of BCE and the laws that govern our profession.  The board’s mission ultimately is to protect the consumer. A robust partnership will help educate chiropractors to prevent inadvertent violations as result of simple ignorance of the laws.  A good use of our time and resources for certain.

It looks to be another dynamic year for your GA team and as you can see we’re ready to rock and roll on behalf of chiropractic.  It’s our distinct pleasure to welcome you to 2017 with optimism and determination.  As the erudite and iconic actor Ricardo Montalban used to say in greeting his guests on the 1977-82 television show Fantasy Island, “Smiles, everyone.  Smiles.”

That’s all the news that’s fit to print, and some that probably isn’t…for now.
