Comprehensive Eye Exams With Our Chicago Eye Doctor

Healthy Eye

At Eye Society, our Chicago eye doctor considers your eye and vision health a top priority. We're proud to offer a wide range of eye care services, including comprehensive eye and vision exams right here in our office. If it's been more than a year since your last eye exam or if you've noticed any recent changes in your eye health, it's time to schedule an appointment with our Chicago optometrist today. In fact, eye exams can not only detect problems with your ocular health but your overall physical health as well.

What Your Eyes Can Say About Your Overall Health

You already know that your routine eye exam checks for signs of eye conditions and diseases, as well as changes in your corrective vision prescription. But did you know that your eyes can also be a window into your overall health and wellness? An experienced eye doctor can spot signs and symptoms during an eye exam that could indicate an underlying medical problem. For example, your routine eye exam could detect signs of diabetes, such as high-pressure levels in the eyes (also known as glaucoma) and even small amounts of blood at the back of the eye. This condition is most common in those with diabetes, and a diagnosis can be confirmed with your regular doctor.

In some cases, tumors can also be seen by an eye doctor during your eye and vision exam. These can sometimes be spotted using retinal photography, which takes a high-resolution and precise image of the back of each eye. Even if the tumor itself is not visible in the image, signs of the tumor (such as an increase in pressure or damage to the optic nerve) could be. It is not uncommon for an eye doctor to be the first one to spot these kinds of symptoms and encourage a patient to see their regular doctor or a specialist for a more in-depth screening.

Some other medical issues that can sometimes be detected during an eye exam include high blood pressure and high cholesterol. In other words, there are more reasons to see your eye doctor for an annual exam than to make sure your corrective vision prescription is up to date.

How Often Should You Schedule a Chicago Eye Exam?

A Chicago eye exam once a year is ideal for most patients, though for patients with known eye problems or older patients, twice-annual exams may be encouraged. Our eye doctor can give you a better idea of how often you should be coming into optimising your eye and vision health.
