At Eye Society, we're proud to offer a wide range of eye and vision care services, including corneal refractive therapy in Chicago. If you have a less-than-ideal vision and are tired of wearing corrective lenses, this unique form of vision therapy can help you improve your eyesight without the need for surgery. In fact, CRT literally allows you to correct your vision while you sleep.
When you undergo corneal refractive therapy, you are given custom-made contact lenses by your eye doctor that is designed to be worn overnight. These therapeutic lenses gently reshape your cornea while you sleep, correcting curvature that causes poor vision quality. When you wake up, you simply remove your contact lenses and enjoy the benefits of improved vision throughout the day. Many patients who undergo this therapy find they can go the entire day without needing to wear corrective lenses. This long-standing vision therapy has been around for many years and has been proven effective in many patients with vision problems caused by a curvature of the eye's lens, such as astigmatism.
CRT is a great option for those who dislike wearing corrective lenses in their everyday life and is an especially popular option for athletes. Adolescents are among the most common recipients of CRT lenses, but many adults are viable candidates for this unique form of vision therapy as well.
Most people have many questions about CRT, and we always encourage questions! Below are answers to a few of the most common questions we receive.
Generally, near-sighted individuals will see the best results with corneal refractive therapy, though only an eye doctor will be able to tell you for sure whether you're a good candidate. The nice thing about CRT is that it can be discontinued at any time, so patients can simply stop wearing their therapeutic lenses at night if needed. People of all ages can enjoy the benefits of CRT as well, and it is a common choice for patients who are too young for LASIK.
The specific results can vary from one patient to the next, though most people who undergo CRT end up with 20/40 vision or better, which is the standard for being able to drive without glasses in the United States. Some patients do end up with 20/20 vision.
Many patients will start to notice vision improvement within a couple of days of wearing their lenses at night. However, optimal results will usually take a few weeks.
