Making Eyeglasses Last in Chicago

You’re thinking about getting eyeglasses in Chicago to improve your vision. You know you’ll wear your new glasses for up to two years before you see your Chicago optometrist again, so it’s important they stay in good shape.

If you’re a first-time glasses wearer, here is everything you need to know about maintaining and caring for your glasses.

 Smart Tips for Wearing Eyeglasses

  • At the end of each day, always wipe down the lenses. You should do this every single day, sometimes multiple times a day depending on the activities you participated in. This removes smudges, dirt, and bacteria from the lenses.
  • Dry your lenses with a soft fiber cloth. NEVER use a paper towel! This could scratch the delicate lenses. Try to resist wiping them on your shirt or pants to remove smudges, too, as this could also lead to lens scratching.
  • Get two pairs of eyeglasses in Chicago when you see your optometrist. This backup pair can come in handy in a pinch, like if you accidentally lose or break your glasses.
  • Don’t leave your glasses just sitting around. First, you’re at risk of losing them if you do this. Second, they could end up scratched or damaged.
  • Invest in a hard-shell glasses case or use the soft glasses case your optometrist provided you when you got the glasses. Fold your glasses up and put them in the case every night before you go to bed. Eventually, it’ll become second nature.
  • Be smart about where you wear them. If you’re going to the beach, for instance, or the amusement park, bring your glasses case with you. You probably don’t want to wear your glasses in the water. You also don’t want to risk them flying off your face on a roller coaster!
  • Buy a glasses maintenance kit. This often includes replacement screws for the arms of your glasses. Tighten these up periodically. Your optometrist may be able to do this for you free of charge.
  • Don’t leave your glasses in bed or on the couch. There’s a chance you could roll over and crush them!
