At Heights Eye Center, our optometrist is committed to providing the highest standard of care in Hasbrouck Heights NJ and the surrounding communities. We offer a wide range of eye and vision care services, including diagnosis and treatment/management for eye diseases and conditions. One of the more common conditions we see in our office is that of glaucoma, which can lead to permanent vision loss if left untreated.
Glaucoma is a serious eye disease that occurs when excess pressure builds up inside one or both eyes. This pressure then begins to affect te optic nerve, which can lead to permanent vision loss. There are many potential causes of glaucoma, ranging from genetics and age to prescription medications and even underlying medical conditions.
Often times, there are no obvious symptoms of the disease until vision loss begins to occur. By then, it may not be possible to reverse vision loss, but treatment and management could help prevent additional loss of vision.
Our eye specialist can screen for glaucoma in a matter of minutes using tonometry, which measures the pressure in each eye. If you have a high pressure reading in one or both eyes, we will want to further investigate and begin treating for glaucoma as soon as possible. The good news is that glaucoma can usually be managed using certain medications, such as beta blockers, to reduce pressure in the eye. In more severe cases, however, surgical intervention may be needed to relieve pressure on the optic nerve.
The best way to protect yourself from vision loss associated with glaucoma is to see an eye doctor regularly for eye exams and screenings!
